Mayor Karl Dean appears before Metro Council to speak against effort to amend Metro Charter to designate English as the only language Metropolitan Government will conduct business

August 8 , 2008 .- The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NAHCC) applauds Mayor Karl Dean's "English-Only" address and the leadership of the Metro Council during last night's meeting in voting "YES" to Resolution 2008-402 opposing the English-Only" Metro Charter amendment ballot initiative.

At-Large Councilman Ronnie Steine's resolution passed with the overwhelming support of 25 votes.  The resolution put before the Metro Council was to go on record opposing the "English-Only" ballot initiative.  The resolution requests voters not to sign the petition and if on the November ballot, not to support it.

The 25-8 vote (2 abstentions) reflected efforts by community leaders and organizations that teamed up to express opposition to the notion of passing unwelcoming legislation.  According to Mayor Dean, "English-Only" would have a profound negative impact on the ongoing efforts by the office of Economic and Community Development and the Nashville Chamber of Commerce who work every day to recruit business relocation and expansion to our city.

NAHCC announcements expressed concern regarding the "English-Only" ballot initiative.  We
asked our members to petition their respective Metro Council members to support Steine's resolution which was echoed by a press release sent by the Metro Human Relations Commission.

NAHCC and the Metro Human Relations Commission (press announcement here) were joined by individuals, businesses and organizations concerned about the harsh negative impact "English-Only" implementation would have on Nashville 's image as an inclusive and welcoming city.

At-Large Council members Jerry Maynard and Megan Berry both displayed genuine leadership and concern in addressing the importance of Council going on record opposing the proposed Charter Amendment ballot initiative.

Councilwoman Berry pointed out that the concept of English-Only/English First began in the Council several years ago.  Nashvillians have a right to know where each council member stands on the issue.

The leadership and members of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce commend Mayor Karl Dean's response to our concerns and the many voiceless residents of Nashville. Mayor Dean's address last night demonstrated his indisputable commitment to our city and its people.  He defended embracing diversity and inclusiveness, which makes Nashville truly a city for all.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mayor Dean and all the honorable council members who stood in solidarity in opposition to this divisive and mean-spirited proposed Charter Amendment.  We thank them for their commitment to public service and representing all Nashvillians in a manner that makes us proud to call Nashville home.

"English-Only" Metro Charter amendment petition is of grave concern to the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Negative impact will affect Nashville's image as an inclusive and welcoming city.

Click here to contact your Metro Council representative now via e-mail

Through the following press announcement the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NAHCC), expresses support for Councilman Ronnie Steine's upcoming resolution for the Metro Council to go on record opposing the "English-Only" charter amendment ballot initiative.

English is already the "official and legal language" of Tennessee.  In November of 2006, the Council passed resolution RS2006-1650, clarifying that state law already establishes English as the official language, and expressing concern that further English-only legislation could actually be bad for English acquisition.

While no one disputes the importance of learning English, it is of concern to the leadership of the NAHCC the implications of an "English-Only" law.

"The NAHCC is concerned about this proposal's impact to our economy and further economic development. "English Only" will hurt Nashville's tourism from foreign countries - country music is becoming a very popular genre in many foreign countries, many of them Spanish speaking countries- It will put a damper on legal immigration to Nashville" said NAHCC President Yuri Cunza.

"English Only" is very plainly anti- foreigner - it flashes a loud neon sign to all foreign nationals "NOT WELCOME". This does not represent the friendly and welcoming tradition of Nashville.

"Passage of this kind of legislation will damage ongoing efforts by city leaders, neighbors and organizations whose tireless work have made out of Nashville a great place to live, work and visit. Let's not further affect the economic growth and opportunities for our city and its people by showing and unwelcoming side of Nashville that does not reflect its residents" added Cunza.

The NAHCC has been instrumental in improving the image of our businesses and the community at large, promoting the importance of creating avenues designed to improve trade and communication levels.

"We want to encourage all Council members to support Councilman Steine's resolution as a display of solidarity in standing behind the multitude of important reasons "English Only" would be poor public policy and not good for Nashville" says Luis Bustillos Vice-Chair of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The proposed ballot initiative is "English-only" not "English-first."  The initiative is an attempt to eliminate the use of all non-English languages by Metro government.  The word "only" appears twice in the proposed language, and the word "first" doesn't appear at all.  The outright prohibition is excessive and potentially dangerous.  It will almost certainly be found to violate federal law and the city could end up spending hundreds of thousands of dollars defending this misguided ballot initiative, only to see it struck down in court.

The promotion of "English Only" says to new businesses and students considering Nashville that foreign people are not welcome and will not be accommodated.  According to the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, Japanese investment alone in Tennessee exceeded $9.4 billion in 2004, creating over 40,000 jobs.

"The threat to public safety and the ability of Nashville government to communicate with all city residents would be seriously compromised if this and other similar legislation came to fruition.  Imposing an artificial language barrier will create confusion and make all Nashvillians less safe and divided" added Loraine Segovia a member of the Executive Board of the NAHCC.

Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Endorses May Town Center Development in Bells Bend As Economic Engine

Nashville, Tennessee --- The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NAHCC) announces its endorsement and support to the May Town Center development planned for Bells Bend, citing the $4 billion Smart Growth project as an economic boon for the region that will benefit its members' businesses and customers.
nahcc
"The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce strongly supports May Town Center, a project that will not only positively impact our constituency, but all of Middle Tennessee," said Yuri Cunza, president of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which represents more than 200 businesses throughout the area. "Our organization sees May Town Center as an opportunity for all communities to come together to address the challenges facing our City by supporting the progressive change embodied by May Town. This project will create new tax dollars to fund city priorities, new high paying jobs and a new model for sustainable development that will benefit us all."

May Town Center will provide ample corporate campuses for corporations seeking to relocate to Nashville, in addition to an array of office, retail and residential offerings. The
NAHCC believes the $50 -100 million in projected annual tax revenues and 40,000 new jobs provide a strong argument for the Metro Planning Commission to approve the rezoning necessary as a first step toward making May Town a reality. The Chamber also endorses the Smart Growth aspects of the project which include preserving 900+ acres of land, creating multi-modal transportation opportunities and employing environmentally friendly building techniques throughout the project.

"Nashville is at a pivotal moment and we as a community must make smart development decisions if we're going to continue to grow and thrive.  May Town Center is the epitome of a smart decision," added Cunza.  "On behalf of
NAHCC members and the thousands of hard-working people they employ, we strongly encourage our elected officials and city planners to support May Town Center."

NAHCC members range from small Hispanic owned businesses to major global corporations. The Chamber's mission is to represent the interests of the Hispanic business community and actively pursue opportunities for its members' advancement and economic prosperity.

The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)6 non-profit business organization founded in the year 2000. The mission of the NAHCC is to help Nashville become a better place to live, work and visit by creating positive environments conducive to business growth, education, integration, and cultural appreciation.  Through partnerships the NAHCC creates programs to support educational causes and/or empower entrepreneurship opportunities as well as mainstream business member initiatives not restricted to the Hispanic enterpreneur or market.

Horatio Alger Distinguished Americans Honoree Mark Victor Hansen Offers VIP Scholarships To Hispanic Youth For One-Day Mega Success Event Through NAHCC In Nashville

    nahcc

Chicken Soup for the Soul author, Mark Victor Hansen is one of the best known and most respected authorities in the area of human potential. For over 30 years, Mark has created change for people around the world by reshaping their vision of what's possible.

Hansen believes this is especially true with America's youth. He personally mentors promising teens that would not otherwise have the opportunity to grow to their potential.

In that spirit, and with the support of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Mark's upcoming Mega Success event at Opryland Hotel on April 17th will be extra special because of the promising Hispanic youth who will be attending as Mark's VIP guests for the day.

As a partner of the Mega Success event, Executive Director of the Tom Black Center for Selling and former NAHCC board member, Shannon Kasakevics, CMP comments, " I strongly believe that this opportunity will greatly impact the lives of the Hispanic students in attendance and will place them on the fast track to success which includes the promise of giving back to the community in a meaningful way".

President of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NAHCC), Yuri Cunza noted that, "To positively impact America as a whole, we need to teach the individual youth of our nation that with the right perspective, opportunity, and tools, anyone with a dream can achieve greatness.  However, we live in a world of some harsh realities that we must overcome to achieve success. According to Population Resource Center, in 2000, 47% of Hispanic Youth ages 25-29 did not graduate high school and of those that did graduate, only 10% had a college degree. These numbers have improved somewhat since 2000, largely due to the efforts of local Hispanic chambers and associations, but there is still a lot of work to be done within the Hispanic community. I believe that even one powerful day of mentoring can literally make the difference between good and great".

"The Hispanic community provides one of the greatest opportunities for the next wave of American genius. It is an opportunity that should be nurtured and developed for our continued economic success in an increasingly competitive global economy. There is phenomenal potential for Hispanic youth", says Mark Victor Hansen.

The Mark Victor Hansen Foundation provides youth scholarships and gives access to the great thinkers, motivators and producers of our time through his Mega Seminar Series.

La Cámara de Comercio Hispana de Nashville ( NAHCC) y Mark Victor Hansen, ganador del premio Horatio Alger ofrece Becas VIP a Jóvenes Hispanos de Tennessee para un Mega Éxito Evento de Un-Día.

    nahcc

Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce reacts to state attorney general's opinion

Criminalizing pay to undocumented workers deemed unconstitutional

The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NAHCC), the largest and most influential advocate for Hispanic owned businesses in Nashville and Middle Tennessee, issued the following statement from its leadership in response to the state attorney general's opinion on a legislative proposal to make it a crime for undocumented immigrants to accept pay for working.

NAHHC commends the Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper for his determination that the "Involuntary Servitude" Bill by Sen. Haynes and Rep. Turner is unconstitutional. This bill directly interferes with the enforcement of the Federal Labors Standards Act which protects worker's rights.

Both Sen. Haynes and Rep. Turner are experienced enough to know that slavery was outlawed 150 years ago. Our country fought a civil war and saw its greatest president assassinated to rid our country of the blight of slavery. The proposed legislation threatened to set our state back 150 years until Attorney General Cooper intervened with his excellent legal opinion.

Tennessee has enough problems with unscrupulous employers cheating immigrant workers by paying wages less than the minimum wage and refusing to pay overtime. Our state certainly did not need to add to these cruelties the additional indignity of slavery.

In the process of addressing the frustrating issue of a broken immigration system we must be careful that our state government does not disregard or interfere with existing federal laws.

As Nashville's leading voice for Hispanic businesses, the NAHCC recognizes the need to have secure borders that remain open to trade and business, we reaffirm the need for a guest worker program that would match willing foreign workers with willing U.S. employers securing jobs that suffer from a shortage of a qualified and available labor force.

The Tennessee Legislature goes to great lengths each year to criminalize immigrants. What many do not realize is that 40% of undocumented immigrants have committed no crime because they legally entered the country and overstayed their visas (which is not a crime). For the other 60%, the fact is that the federal government for years "winked and nodded" as immigrants crossed the border without documentation because the government knew U.S. employers needed the additional labor force they could not get because of the unreasonably restrictive numerical limits of work visas.

As responsible Americans we cannot continue indifferent to the struggle of millions of undocumented workers forced to live in the shadows. This is the reality of our nation and we can not longer deny or ignore it.

It is of utmost importance that we team up in our efforts to push our federal government to pass a comprehensive immigration reform designed to improve our nation's security without affecting our economic prosperity.

A guest worker program is a critical component in securing a strong, viable workforce to meet the demands of our growing and highly diverse economy. The proposal of draconian, unrealistic and unenforceable laws will only result in wasteful expenditures, encourage profiling, threatens to separate families and further disrupt our economy.

    On behalf of the NAHCC,

    Yuri Cunza

    President

$6.5 MILLION IN STATE LOANS, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

AVAILABLE FOR SMALL AND MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESSES

Statewide Program Provides Loans Up To $125,000

With the arrival of the new year comes an exciting new program for small-business owners, courtesy of the General Assembly --- the Small and Minority-Owned Business (SMOB) Assistance Program. The State of Tennessee Treasury Department is responsible for administration of the SMOB program.

The Legislative Black Caucus of the Tennessee General Assembly was instrumental in the creation and development of this program geared toward helping any qualified small businesses and minority-owned businesses move to their next level of growth.

The program consists of two components: A $6.5 million loan pool and program services. The loans, up to $125,000, must be used for specific projects such as acquisition of machinery and equipment, working capital, supplies and materials, inventory and other specific business-related activity.

On the program services side, current or potential business owners can receive assistance with policies and procedures, financial assessments, cash flow analysis and other business assistance they may need to successfully launch or improve their business.

The program was developed to help small businesses that do not have reasonable access to traditional commercial lending resources. The Southeast Tennessee Development District, located in Chattanooga, TN, has been selected by the Treasury Department to administer this program. This program increases the opportunity to access the capital needed to start or to expand a small business. It is the State's goal for there to be benefit from the program in all of Tennessee's 95 counties.

According to She'rri McClellan, Director of SMOB, "this small-business program is for people who are thinking about starting a business and need a business plan; and also for those who have a business but need help developing the company to make it more competitive." McClellan notes that a very important function of the SMOB program is to remove the roadblocks that usually occur when entrepreneurs try to establish or grow a small business.

Rather than using standard commercial banks to provide loan services, the State of Tennessee Treasury Department has contracted with select lenders around the state to originate and service loans to businesses that qualify for participation in the program. The lenders for this program have different underwriting criteria than conventional lenders and they are highly sensitive to the hurdles faced by many small-business owners and minority-owned businesses.

Qualified business owners interested in participating in the program should begin by completing the forms on the SMOB website-www.tnsmob.org--and submit them.

Another option for contact is by phone at (866) 918-7360. Once the forms are reviewed, owners will be contacted and advised of the next steps required to move forward in the process. Depending on the stage of development of the business, owners may be directed to local organizations for further technical assistance to become fully prepared to launch their business, or they may be prepared to a point of readiness that they can apply for a loan immediately.

The Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies (CLAIS) is pleased to announce that Vanderbilt's Enhancing Graduate Education program run by Associate Provost Dennis Hall has agreed to fund a new program of LATIN AMERICAN VISITING RESOURCE PROFESSORS.

This program will fund two distinguished Latin American scholars, politicians, or writers per year to come to Vanderbilt for approximately four weeks to participate in a graduate seminar, offer a non-credit special topic seminar, and to interact more widely with graduate students.

Candidates for the Visiting Resource Professorship (VRP) will be nominated each year by Vanderbilt faculty members from any department or school; faculty members will have to demonstrate how the nominated scholar will contribute to a graduate course the faculty member is teaching during the proposed semester. The VRP would be in charge of a designated number of seminar sessions, assigning readings for those sessions, and leading class discussion.

In departments where students have sufficient proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese, the class should be conducted in that language to promote a much-needed "languages across the curriculum" approach. We especially encourage the nomination of scholars, whose work transcends several disciplines, making the proposed seminars compelling for students in related fields and thus promoting the sort of interdisciplinary cross-fertilization so crucial to making our graduate students' work more competitive in the marketplace.

The VRP would also offer a special-topics, non-credit graduate seminar on a subject of his or her choice. This special seminar would meet 2-3 times during the VRP's stay at Vanderbilt. This would give graduate students who are not enrolled in the relevant class an opportunity to meet with the scholar as well; we encourage these special seminars to be as interdisciplinary as possible so that the greatest range of graduate students could reap the benefits.

AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION COMMISSION ON IMMIGRATION CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT IMMIGRANTS FROM "NOTARIO FRAUD"

The American Bar Association Commission on Immigration has launched a Campaign to Protect Immigrants from "Notario Fraud" to address the growing prevalence of this troubling practice in recent years. Through the Campaign, the Commission engages in efforts to warn immigrant communities about the dangers of unscrupulous notarios, and to help them avoid victimization.

With generous support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Commission is expanding its Campaign to help legal service providers build capacity to serve immigrants who have been victimized by notarios.

More and more notarios are exploiting the trust of immigrants who are new to this country. Unfamiliar with our language and legal system, immigrants may be misled to believe that a "notario" is a lawyer.

The consequences are often lost opportunities to pursue immigration relief because of the damage that an ill-intended notario has caused to one's case. Most victims do not have the resources to seek help, which in turn, has allowed fraudulent notarios to continue their practices with no accountability.

The Commission is offering mini-grants to non-profit immigration service providers around the country, to enable them to train pro bono attorneys to bring unauthorized practice of law or related claims, and/or to reopen immigration cases on behalf of victims. State specific training curricula will be developed and provided to each site by the ABA for use in the trainings. The mini-grant is intended to cover overhead costs for the trainings, including staff time, and will be approximately $1500 depending on how many sites are selected.

To apply for the mini-grant, please answer the following questions to the best of your knowledge, in no more than 2 pages:

    1. How would you rate the prevalence of "notario fraud" within your community? Does it appear to be increasing? How you are generally made aware of the problem?

    2. How strong is the demand for legal services by victims in the community served by your site? What level of pro bono or low-cost assistance is currently available to assist them in holding notarios accountable and/or reopening their immigration cases?

    3. Are you aware of any laws in your state that may be used to bring claims against notarios?

    4. Has your organization previously trained pro bono attorneys to assist victims of notario fraud? What is your site's current and/or prior experience with recruiting, training, and mentoring pro bono attorneys and coordinating case referrals (in any type of case)?

    5. Each site is required to train approximately 30 pro bono attorneys, during either one or multiple trainings. Is there a sufficient pool of pro bono attorneys to train within your community? How many attorneys do you anticipate being able to recruit for trainings, and how many cases do you anticipate that you may place during the one-year period following the training(s)? How will you recruit volunteers?

The Commission will give priority to sites that establish a compelling need within their community for legal services to assist victims, and that also have a sufficient pool of pro bono attorney to train.

Please submit your application and any questions to Erin Finsten at e_finsten@hotmail.com.

Applications are due by Friday, March 28 and awards will be made by Friday, April 11.

President Bush to Address U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Third time U.S. President addresses USHCC Legislative Conference and representatives of nation's 2.5 million Hispanic businesses

Washington, DC -- For the third time, President Bush has agreed to address the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) at its annual national Legislative Conference themed "Hispanic Business: Shaping Tomorrow's Policy." President Bush will be speaking at a special White House Briefing on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at the Ronald Reagan Building.

"As the leading advocate for our nation's more than 2.5 million Hispanic-owned businesses," said USHCC Board Chairman David C. Lizárraga, "we are greatly honored by President Bush's decision to address the key leaders assembled from across the country for this important Conference. As in past

years, we look forward to the President using this platform to deliver a major policy address dealing with issues of utmost importance to small- and medium-sized businesses that are vital contributors to our nation's economy."

Other key officials participating in the Conference include Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, United States Treasurer Anna Cabral, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and numerous other distinguished Members of Congress. Congresswomen Nydia Velazquez and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will be receiving the 2008 Legislative Awards.

"President Bush's decision to attend the Legislative Conference follows the MSNBC Democratic Presidential Debate that the USHCC co-sponsored in January," said Augustine Martinez, USHCC President and CEO. "USHCC's ability to attract and host Presidential front-runners and U.S. Presidents alike is

a testament to our growing influence as a population and economic engine."

According to the U.S. Census, there are nearly 27 million businesses in the United States. It is projected that by 2010, Hispanic-owned firms will represent 1 out of 10 businesses in the U.S. and collectively generates over $465 billion a year in revenue. The Legislative Conference brings together the nation's top business owners, opinion leaders and key governmental and administration officials for a three-day gathering to address the most pressing legislative concerns of the nation's largest and fastest growing business segment-Hispanic entrepreneurs. Expansion of hemispheric relations and trade, health care, energy efficiency, and small business programs are among the many issues receiving top billing at this year's Legislative Conference.

    Hispanic Employment Remains Strong

The United States Department of Labor released its monthly report today  entitled "Employment status of the Hispanic or Latino population by sex and  age," which sparked positive employment gains for the Hispanic labor force.

About 110,000 more Hispanics were employed in the month of October than in the month of September -- a 0.54 percent increase month-to-month. Employed Hispanic males added 87,000 jobs, or 0.73 percent of the 110,000-job increase. The unemployment rate for Hispanic males stayed unchanged at 4.6 percent (the same rate as in September 2007), but represents a 1.2 percent increase from October a year ago. Hispanic women gained 15,000 jobs over the previous month, and more impressively, 362,000 jobs from October of 2006. The unemployment rate of Hispanic women at 4.8 percent remains a little higher than for men. Hispanics overall have been closing the unemployment gap with respect to non-Hispanics, now within 1 percentage point of the overall U.S. unemployment rate.

This is strongly correlated to the incredible decrease in unemployment rates attributed to Hispanic women in the workforce.

Hispanic teenagers have the largest unemployment rate, which reached 17.3 percent in October, 2.6 points higher than the rate for the overall teenager population in the United States (14.7 percent).  (source: Hispanic Business)

Immigration hodgepodge may be downright illegal

                                                                                                                  (Source: The Tennessean Newspaper)

    Our View

Congress' inability to reach consensus on immigration reform has been a major source of frustration for Americans this year, and officials in many state and local governments have decided not to wait for Washington.

Feeling the heat from the portion of the public that believes a rising wave of illegal immigrants is out of control, lawmakers enacted 182 new immigration laws in 43 states in the first half of this year, according to figures from the National Conference of State Legislatures. That doesn't include measures taken by local governments.

Most of the laws are intended to clamp down, from banning renting homes to illegal immigrants to (in Oklahoma) making it a felony to "transport" or "harbor" them.

Tennessee is among these states, having revoked driving certificates for illegal immigrants and empowering state and local law-enforcement officers to act as immigration officials.                                                                         (Click here for full editorial)

La Raza pulls its Kansas City convention - (loss in economic impact of $5+ million)

"The National Council of La Raza's board voted this afternoon to yank its 2009 convention from Kansas City in protest of a park board appointee belonging to a

group it believes is hostile to Hispanics.

The board followed the recommendation of local La Raza affiliates, who had asked

the board to pull the convention. Two months ago, the head of La Raza, Kansas

native Janet Murguía, told Mayor Mark Funkhouser that if his appointee, Frances

Semler, didn't step down from the park board, La Raza would likely pull the

    convention.

The convention had been expected to fill more than 5,000 hotel rooms, with an

economic impact to the city of more than $5 million."                (source: Hispanic Tips)

Mexican Immigrant Takes Lead in Defending Education

Mexican immigrant Flor Guillen has gone in just a short time from not knowing any

English to being one of Colorado's most recognized and respected leaders for her

work to improve public education in the state. A resident of Aurora, east of Denver, Guillen has taken an active role among local residents in working to improve the schools.

With 300,000 people, Aurora is Colorado's third-biggest city, and Hispanics represent a fifth of the population. Between the mid-1990s and 2006, Aurora was the city in the Denver metropolitan area that attracted the most Latino immigrants - almost 50,000 according to a local charity - thanks mainly to its more-affordable housing.

Bring Immigration Reform Bill Back to the Table

Take action now, the negotiation is not over
CALL CONGRESS NOW AND TELL THEM NOT GIVE UP ON IMMIGRATION REFORM!!

A vote of 45-50 against a motion for cloture lead to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to pull the

immigration reform bill last Thursday night.

"We are to hold our Senators responsible for the well being, stability and further

development of the nation forced into a state of denial of our inherently related

labor and immigration reform needs. The same Hispanic population who has

been conveniently welcomed to help us grow is now in need of our reciprocity.

We are not asking for charity, we ask for what is due. Millions of hard working

Hispanics and their families who live in the shadows need us to step up for them

to get what is fair. This is how we start building a real pathway to national

security: By creating a nation in which we all are in, in which we are all equal.

In which we all defend the same cause because we know we all belong".

~ Yuri Cunza, President, Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Listen to audio message in Spanish

We are not to lose the hope that maintaining the interest on the issue and expressing our

views to our representatives in congress will lead to workable legislation that respects

immigrant workers rights and their families. This is a time in which we all, concerned

citizens should exercise our right to tell our government about the need for real and

immediate solutions to an immigration problem that can not longer wait.

Let your voice be heard! Call your Senators today

Express your views about how they voted. Our representatives from Tennessee both Corker and

Alexander voted against cloture. Ask them to no longer delay a final vote to resolve this problem.

And ask them to keep working to achieve a comprehensive reform this year that will keep families

united, protect workers rights and respect due process. Ask them to pass an immigration reform that

    is just and fair.

Many controversial amendments have both passed and failed, and this in turn has complicated the

negotiations over the immigration bill. We need you to tell Congress to work past the problems and

to not give up on immigration reform.

Please call your Senators by using these TOLL FREE telephone numbers:

    For instructions in English:   1-800-417-7666

    For instructions in Spanish:  1-800-882-2005.

    Bob Corker

    Tell your Senators:

We need immigration reform for our businesses, economy and communities.  Please work past the problems, vote for cloture, and keep the process moving forward.

This reform needs to improve the guest worker and employee verification requirements. As a Hispanic business owner, I will judge Members of Congress for years to come on whether they genuinely helped reform succeed or fail.

    United We Are Stronger....

"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity.
Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true".

    Hispanic Heritage Month 2006
    September 15-October 15

In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15). During this month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
